Iyengar yoga uses props, such as blankets, blocks, bolsters, chairs, and belts to facilitate learning and adjust poses to an individual’s needs.
A unique feature of Live Oak Yoga is the rope wall. Students learn to use the support of the ropes to deepen their awareness of the asanas. Fundamental poses can be held for a longer time to adjust alignment, increase the extension of the muscles and open the joints.
“Yoga aims for complete awareness in whatever you do.”
Iyengar yoga is based on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, an internationally revered yoga master. He is the author of many books about yoga practice and yoga philosophy including the classic treatise, Light on Yoga. He played a central role in the spread of yoga throughout the world. Into his 90's Iyengar continued to practice yoga daily, teaching and inspiring students from around the world at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune, India. He passed away at the age of 95 in 2014.
Iyengar yoga is a systematic method that emphasizes correct alignment and the development of a student's ability within each class and from class to class.
Iyengar teaching is characterized by precise, clear instruction and demonstration of specific teaching points. Certified Iyengar teachers are required to go through extensive training to be able to individualize their teaching for each student, with special adjustments made for various body types and conditions.
Iyengar yoga is more precise than any style of yoga I’ve experienced. Karyl is an observant and thoughtful teacher. The studio offers a peacefulness that allows you to go into a meditative state while energizing your body. We all walk out smiling when class ends radiating positive energy wherever we go.
